Jolla C smartphone

Forum: Symbian and Meego - www.geekzone.co.nz
I've just managed to snag one of these.   I've been wanting to try out Sailfish OS for quite a while now. Sailfish is developed from Nokia's Meego, a platform which I really rate.  The guys at Jolla are ex Nokia employees. The original Jolla 1 didn't have the right frequencies and Jolla tablet didn't materialise as planned. Recently Intex of India released the Aqua Fish which runs Sailfish 2, unfortunately the frequencies are not what I need. Then Jolla announced the Jolla C running Sailfish 2 for release to developers to enable them to build apps for the Jolla Store and to trial Beta versions of Sailfish. The Jolla C was only available for sale in parts of Europe and only 1000 or so were available. I've been lucky to pick one up second hand. One thing they've done with Sailfish is build in a compatibility to run Android apps, to give Jolla owners a wider choice of apps while the Jolla app store builds up it's inventory. By all accounts the Android apps work well without too many issues. Having said that there is already a good selection of popular apps in the Jolla Store. The phones specs are nothing special in comparison to other smartphones of today, in fact some things like the camera aren't as good as the Jolla 1. Apparently the screen isn't made of Gorilla glass either and a protector in a must. However for me it's the chance to be able to try out Sailfish that is important.  Sailfish 2 is apparently a big improvement over Sailfish 1. By all accounts the OS runs very well on relatively low spec hardware and there are good reports about it. One of the features of Sailfish is there are no buttons (hardware or software wise) except for the power button and the volume rocker. Everything is done with swiping gestures across or up and down the screen. Because of this, pretty well everything action can be done single handed with the phone held in your palm and the thumb doing the work. In this regard it is similar to Meego.  New owners coming from Android or iOS initially find there is a a learning curve but when mastered they find their old OS clunky by comparison. There are a couple of features not found in a lot of smartphones these days, a removable battery, dual sims slots, micro SD slot. Once I've had a chance to use it for a while I'll report back with my thoughts, good and bad.
