Jelly Bean 4.1.2 Security Pattern and password

My Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Note has the option of security pattern, telling it the number of trials possible, followed by a pin or password of my choice. My Motorola Electrify M phone has the security pattern, but none of the options (number of trials, back up password). I think it defaults to my gmail password if I exceed 5 trials. I like the idea of setting the number of trials. Why the difference?
