Google - How do I make Google Maps less chatty?

Mobile Computing Outpost - Ars Technica OpenForum - arstechnica.com
I don't remember when it started doing this, but now whenever I set a destination, Google Maps would follow up with "You are on the fastest route..." 5 ~ 10 seconds later. This is utterly pointless (why would I not want the fastest route, unless I'd explicitly specified to avoid tolls / highways, etc.) and distracting. Is there a way to turn this off?

Incidentally, Google Maps would also inform me of delays due to accidents. This is usually helpful, except on the 405. There are always accident(s) and delay(s) on the 405. It ought to announce only when there aren't any, as that would be notable.
