G2 doesn't read sim card

I just bought a used G2 for my son to be used as a wifi phone. I successively rooted and have Andromadus jellybelly on there. The phone was sold as unable to read the sim card, and I am wondering if there is a method to figure out if the reason is software related vs physical/hardware related? Any suggestions on what to try?
